Wednesday March 5th, 2008, Representative James Jangevin (RI) made his rounds of the morning news networks trying to inform the American public that some nuclear testing equipment may have been rushed into the field, before extensive studying was completed. I do not have a problem with him doing this since he is on the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, and Science and Technology, but he did not have to go into specific details as he did on Fox News.
At 11:15AM (3/5/08) Representative James Jangevin repeatedly made it know in a interview on Fox News that border agents currently could not distinguish with electronic sensors the difference between porcelain, kitty litter, bananas, and nuclear material that could be used for a ‘dirty bomb’ or atomic weapon. And that the border agents are over worked, and not able to meticulously search tons of material entering the United States.
That’s what I have a problem with. Why couldn’t it be just “household materials” or “common materials” until a more capable sensor can be developed? Now every terrorists and Islamic fundamentalist knows it’s possible to easily smuggle nuclear material into the United States by concealing the nuclear material in tons of these “household materials” on a trunk.
So, if this comes back to haunt us, we will have Rhode Island Representative James Jangevin and Senator Hillary Clinton, since he is an advisor for her.
